Cocktail – A romantic comedy

Saif Ali khan is back and with a bang. “Cocktail”, his next venture after Agent Vinod is ready for release in July and the promo has just released to outstanding responses. Produced by his company Illuminati Films, Cocktail stars Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani and Dimple Kapadia in lead. It also launches newcomer Dianna Penty in an interesting role. The promo is amazing and it does generate a positive hype which Agent Vinod Failed to do. The film is a modern day take on relationship where two timing and sex without love is a common aspect, especially in West. Saif plays a playboy who is after every women and Deepika is a cool extrovert girl who believes in living in present. What happens when Saif falls for two girls simultaneously is what the film encapsulates.

What works in Cocktail’s favor is return of Saif Ali Khan in a cool metro sexual look with humor and class. The actor has created a niche in this zone and audience love him for this. Yes as an actor he is entitled to experiment but it’s been quite a while Saif has given a hit and if the promo of Cocktail is any indication, this is a sure shot winner for him. Deepika is looking super hot and glamorous. Thankfully she has put on some weight and is looking mind blowing. The role has enough substance to give her a much needed hit but her acting ability is a concern. She was quite a let down in Love Aaj Kal as critics and audience gave a thumps down to her performance.  But she does deserve a 2^nd chance and her pair with Saif looks super cool. Dianna Penty though a newcomer, looks convincing in the promo but to be able to give her credits, we have to wait for the film to release.

The film marks the return of director Homi Adajania who earlier directed Being Cyrus with Saif. It was a smart English film that earned him quite a few accolades. It would be interesting to see how he makes a mainstream urban film with a touch of his own sensibilities. The film is built along with lines of Hollywood Romantic comedies like Friends with Benefits and many more where relationships have been seen from a humorous angle. It does have a feel of Love Aaj Kal too but hopefully script wise it will be better than the former. Love Aaj Kal worked in bits but not entirely, we expect this one to provide a wholesome entertainment.

The promo has come like a breath of fresh air. While most big films are using routine masala ingredients, Cocktail’s 1^st look has given us something to look forward to. From the music where “Gayatri” mantra has been used to humor, it gives a fresh feel to it. Youth will love the film as such issues are relatable for them. College kids, young couple every one will identify with the story. The film is an acid test for Saif. After the debacle of Agent Vinod, lot is at stake for the actor. He needs a hit to be among the top 5 stars of Bollywood and fortunately this film has the potential to give him the much needed lease of life. Rumor has it that it is after this film Saif-Kareena will tie the knot. This therefore becomes all the more important for the actor.

Come this July 13^th, we are sure to see a fun film after ages. I hope the film promises to deliver and does not just restrict it to a good promo. Needless to say the film will get a big opening, atleast in metros and if it has merit then Saif is sure to have the last laugh.
