Is Paoli Dam the new face of modern cinema? Her last film “Hate Story” has made money and even before she could sit back to enjoy the success of her maiden Bollywood film, she has been offered another Hindi film by Vikram Bhatt which deals with the issue of wife swapping. Incidentally Vikram Bhatt the producer of her 1st Hindi film Hate Story is super excited to work with Paoli for the 2nd time. Amidst all this, has any one tried to discover the reason for her sudden success? She is not conventionally pretty, she is not the most popular star in Bengal and she is not the 1st lady to have made a switch over to Bollywood. But, for some strange reasons Paoli’s transition from Tollywood to Bollywood has been super fast and super successful, with some claiming her to be the new replacement for Bipasha Basu, the original bombshell.
Paoli comes from a very humble middle class background. Post Graduated in Chemistry, Paoli did not pursue her career in field of education but took up acting by performing on stage and theater. Soon after, she graduated to TV serials which were followed by Bengali movie offers. Kalbela, Banshiwala, Takash Teish and Moner Manush are some of her notable performances. Her most controversial film Mushroom had her portraying a nude scene which created lot of controversies. Four minutes nude love making was the 1st for Bengali cinema and it took the nation by storm. Some say it is because of this film Vikram Bhatt took notice of her and offered her Hate Story and as they say rest is history.
For a large section of people within the Bengali industry, Paoli Dam is a mystery and an inspiration. While some accuse her of being over ambitious and desperate for fame, others admire her courage to do unconventional stuff and create a mark for herself. Some have even accused her of being extra friendly with film makers to get job but that has not affected the actress one bit. Her claim of being unapologetic about doing bold scenes for a role has appealed to lot many film makers. Vikram Bhatt who is doing his 2nd film with the actress has said and I quote “.Paoli has the courage to go beyond her body on camera. That’s where I want to go with Love Games.” It shows that the girl has the power to push the envelop time and again. Be it doing intimate scenes in Bengali films to doing a nude scene in Mushroom, she has never shied away from either of the two.
Post her entry in Bollywood, many of her new competitors is feeling the heat. Some say she is here to give Sunny Leone a run for money, while others name her as the new and improved Bipasha. However to be fair to Paoli, she does have an edge over Sunny Leone as the former is a better actress then Leone on any given day. If she works on her diction and keep herself away from being repetitive, she can make Bollywood her home ground. Her new film “Love Games” is one wife swapping which the director feels is a relevant topic in today’s urban cities. Paoli is playing the wife who takes a real root and she is super excited about the role.
Needless to say Paoli is hugely popular. Young boys love her for her raw sex appeal and older men have their jaw open whenever Paoli takes off her cloths. You may like her or reject her but ignoring her is not an option any more. I won’t be surprised if she beats the shit out of Sunny Leone in the popularity poll. Now it’s for you to make that call, Paoli or Leone?

you know Abhishek i completely agree with you when you say that if paoli works on her diction and tries to learn a few nitty gritty to stay in da businnes she has a long way to go! Going by her bengali film releases it is evident that she can act! If she chooses not to be repetitive and stick to some quality work instead of mere skin show she can definitely be on the run for a position in B’town!
yes tuli, even tho i hate her, i hv to admit tht she is an above avg actress..
I feel she is a good actor..have seen few of her bengali movies , the best i remember was “thana theke aaschi” . And moreover she has the guts to try out unconventional and “unsafe” roles which other actress would think twice , thrice before attempting. But yes mere skin show would not help her in the long run.
u r right annesha
