Rarely do we come across a film promo that draws your attention to such a level that you end up craving for more. After watching the trailer of Shanghai I am in a state of disbelief and awe. Disbelief because one has not seen such an impactful promo from Bollywood in recent times and now I can’t wait to see the film on big screen.
Dibakar Banerjee’s political drama is in news for all the right reasons. Be it the unique star cast or the unusual story line, the film has hit the right note in every department. The promo opens with Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee addressing a crowd on human rights and protection of land ownership, followed by a brief introduction of its principal casts Abhay Deol, Emraan Hasmi and Kalki Koechlin.
As the opening lines say “there is always a price for growth and prosperity”, Dibakar Banerjee’s intense drama Shanghai emphasizes on the impact of corruption in Indian politics and bureaucracy. The film tries to capture the journey of politicians and their greed for power and money.Known for unusual story telling and unique casting, Dibakar has got a dream star cast.
Emran Hashmi dons a role of media reporter and looks great in his overweight avatar. The actor is growing from strength to strength with each film and Shanghai will take him to a different league altogether. The actor had to gain weight for his role and the effort is sure to bring in great reward for him.
Abhay Deol looks super convincing in a role a Chief Minister. Known for giving intense performances, Abhay is sure to give a knockout performance in this powerful script driven film.
Kalki is a good actress and her pairing with Abhay has worked big time in Dev D & ZNMD. This time we see her in a serious role and going by the promo she will definitely leave a mark. The film also marks the return of Bengali star
Prosenjit Chatterjee in Bollywood and the actor does not disappoint his fans in the promo.
The promo is highly intriguing and interesting. Kailash Kher’s song “Bharat Mata ki Jai” gives goose bums and also makes a sarcastic remark to the current political scenario of India.
The promo has done its job. Everyone has loved the trailer and it is a huge relief for Dibakar. He is one film maker who has earned a loyal fan base over the years & this one too is sure to make a mark in people’s mind. His movies provide entertainment but in a way that connects mind to heart. He will make you think about the idea once you leave the theater and that is his biggest strength. India needs film makers who can push the envelop with their out of the box thinking and Dibakar is one of them.
Come this June 8th, we are about to witness a cinema that has the potential to take India films in a global forum. If the promo is any indication of its merits, expect a cinematic treat by the makers of Shanghai.
