Dhoni to quit test cricket?

On Thursday Jan 12th, 2012, Indian Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made a sensational statement about his possible retirement from Test cricket to lead India in their World Cup defence in 2015. Ms Dhoni said and I quote “if I want to see the 2015 World Cup in, I’ll have to retire from one of the formats”. At the end of 2013, I will have to decide if I am fit enough to proceed in one of the format. It’s not for personal but for the country and for the individual who is taking my position.”

This revelation hasn’t gone down too well with fans & cricket experts all over the world. Former Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly said “if he continues to play like this in test cricket, it won’t be too long when selectors will show him the exit door from the 5 day format.

In the past it there has been a debate over Ganguly Vs Dhoni in terms of success ration as captain and this fresh controversy has added fuel to the fire.

On one hand Dada holds the record of being the most successful captain overseas, while Dhoni has given India it’s much cherished World cup after 29 long years. However what goes in Sourav’s favor is his incredible record in all forms of cricket. Dada has played maximum number of games after Sachin and has emerged as a winner in both One day and Test Cricket.

Dhoni on other hand has emerged as a quintessential One-day player with not so flourishing Test career. He has played 66 Tests so far winning 17 of the 36 matches in which he has skippered. Even his batting form in test cricket isn’t too commendable. Is this perhaps a reason why he wants to withdraw his hands from 5 day cricket?

It would be unethical on my part to draw a comparison between these 2 superstars. Both are legends in their own right and have their share of success and failure. However we would look forward to your views on this burning issue. Do you support Dhoni’s decision or is it the pressure that has got the better of him?

We are waiting for your views! [Article View] : 1934
