How to upgrade Samsung Galaxy ACE S5830 to Gingerbread (2.3.6)

Samsung has brought a new update for Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 for Asia region. You can try upgrading from Kies, but if it doesn’t work for you, you can follow the steps below to upgrade your Samsung galaxy ace S5830 to S5830DXKT5 stock rom. This is the latest official upgrade (Asia region) provided by Samsung. This is a Singapore update and not official in India yet, but Gingerbread 2.3.4 is still there available as official upgrade for Indian users. European version S5830XWKT7 and Russian version of 2.3.6 S5830XXKPP is also available. If you need specific firmware of your region, check samfirmware.com for your region file.

Steps before Upgrading:

Take backup of Contacts. Go to Contacts > Press Menu button > Click on More > Import/Export > Export to SD card > Confirm by pressing Yes.
Take backup of your messages. For this you need an app. I personally use SMS backup & Restore Pro by Ritesh Sahu, you can get it for free, check this article.
Take backup of the installed apps. For this you need to use a file explorer app, I used ES File Explorer. To take the backup of the apps installed, Open ES File Explorer > Press Menu button > Click on Manager > Click App Manager > Press Multi-select button on the top and select all the apps > Press Menu key > Click on Backup. The backup will be taken in SD card “backup” folder.
Take backup of current settings and application data. Go to Settings >Privacy settings > Put a check mark on Back up my data and Automatic Restore.
Shut down your galaxy ace and remove SD card and SIM card. (Don’t Power On your galaxy ace now)

File required for the process:

Firmware file: Click here

Odin Downloader: Click here

OPS file: Click here

Extract all the zip files. If asked for password use; samfirmware.com as password.

Step By Step Process:

Extract the files that you have downloaded to a specific folder.

Run Odin downloader.
Put a check mark on Auto reboot and Protect OPS.
Click on OPS to browse and select the OPS file. You need to go the destination folder where you have extracted Cooper v1.0 ops file.
Put a check mark on One Package and browse click on the last box that is ONE PACKAGE and select the firmware file S5830DXKT5_S5830OLBKT3_S5830DXKT4_HOME.tar.md5.
You will get the following message once firmware file is checked :

Open File Name : S5830DXKT5_S5830OLBKT3_S5830DXKT4_HOME.tar
Check MD5 ...

Check MD5 ... ok

Press VOLUME DOWN+HOME (middle key) +POWER keys simultaneously to enter in Download mode.
Once you are in the Download mode, connect it to USB data cable and wait for ODIN to detect the phone. Once detected, the COM PORT 1 MAPPING box will become yellow and the phone’s port will be detected. In the message section, you will get the following message:

<1>Added!!!

<1>Detected!!!!

Note: If your phone is not getting recognized in Odin, you might need to install your device’s hardware first. Download the driver from this link. If asked for password, use samfirmware.com as the password.

Now click on START. Wait until the green bar in the first box reached to the end. It will take around 5-6 minutes and will reboot your Galaxy Ace twice or thrice.
Once done, it will give a message as PASS in the COM PORT box as well as message section.
Disconnect the phone from USB. Reboot it and select your language (if you see a different language) and go to Settings > About Phone and check the Firmware Version.
Restore the phone back to factory settings to wife off the data as well as cache. To do it Go to Settings > Privacy settings > Factory Data reset or type this code: *2767*3855#
Once it restarts, shut it down again and insert SD card and SIM card and now your Samsung Galaxy Ace is just like a brand new handset with android gingerbread 2.3.6.

Note: Make sure your Galaxy Ace is fully charged while doing this and take proper back up of apps, contacts and SMS before trying this. This process is checked our Samsung Galaxy Ace and by far we have not seen any bugs. If you face any problem you can write it in comment, we will help you out. Do at your own risk. Noticeable changes after Gingerbread Update:

Better battery backup.
New smart icons.
Better wifi connection.
Bugs fixed of the previous 2.3.4 version.

currently i m using cyanogen 2.3.7.
whenever i try to update it to 2.3.6 i never succeeded.after pressing start button it starts as u have told. but after 2 mins it reastarts and keeps on restarting.after 5 mins i get a message PASS in COMPORT BOX. but the update is never successfull. it just keeps on restarting……………….i dont know why it is happening.
using window 7 64bit
even disabled antivirus

    I had same problem of continuos restart,here is what you can do:-
    1.Pull out the battery and power off your galaxy ace
    2.put it back again and press Volume Up + Home + Power button at the same time.
    3.It should then, boot to recovery where you select Wipe data(by pressing Home button,use volume keys to navigate up and down)
    4.When done, reboot your device and it will boot normally without frequent restarts.
    (it may take few minutes to start but dont worry eventually it will start)
    
    Hope this help because i had few sleepless nights over this

dennagari(marathi) font not fully displayed. some characters are displayed and some are boxed…anyway fantastic work. after this upgrade a lot of internal storage was freed(offcourse had to root the phone for the same) i hope devnagri font issue shall be resolved fully soon! pleae keep me posted for the same!

  well this is Singapore version.. and yes, it does void warranty.. but dont worry, if u face some hardware issues with ur phone, you can alwaz roll over back to the original version.. or version of India..(2.3.4 was the latest)

Recently i just buy this galaxy ace, works fine, except certain games. so i and friend try to upgrade to higher version, seems stupid coz i never check the version already 2.3.6, and i thought that its 2.2. then after rooting & trying, ended screw ups. then tried install another custom, ICS something like that into version 4.0, everything running but certain features were disable & the smooth also gone.. Can it be downgrade back & use this step & firmware?

I had updated to this 2.3.6 firmware but after some days my phone is lagging to much…the I roll back to 2.3.4…..
Is that lagging is because of this version or some incorrect flashing…

What about the IMEI? Is there any chance to have a problem with it? I have saw in others forums, something about people who loses the IMEI# after flash a new firmware.

    I did Install it in my Brazilian version of Ace. Everything was ok. It even looks faster than 2.3.4
    Everything worked, no IMEI problem (he.he).
    The only thing is that there is no Portuguese (Brazil) to choose in “Settings/Locale and Text”. No problem with menus to be in English, what I don´t like is that the Market also gets in English, and all apps gets installed in English.
    I there a way to “force” market to use Brazil location ?

  1. Reboot ur phone to download mode.
  2. Select the files in odin.
  3. connect the phone to usb and wait or drivers to get installed.
  4. CLick on Start once the phone is detected !

Alright i need help urgently..i tried to root a samsung galaxy ace (oman) runnin on 2.2.1 and i did it with super one click but then i tried installing clockwork mod recovery.. i went into recovery mode to install zip from sd card but there was no such option..there was an option called apply sd:update.zip and wipe cache partition so i searched on xda forums and found that to install this we need to rename the recovery clockwork zip to update.zip and den install..now the phone is not booting into recovery mode..
it did boot into normal rooted firmware and i saw the clockwork mod app den i went to that app and clicked reboot into recovery\
den its not booting into recovery nor normal firmware..
then i got some official firmwares thru download mode and tried flashing them wid odin but all fails…
now normal boot shows pc connected to phone with exclamation mark in between..
plz help i just want to get this thing working..

Dear sid, First time I tried, after the start, the application just waited for a long time at “Set up connection…” and then I changed the USB port and started it again. I got the same problem. Odin was able to detect the phone by COM Port mapping box turned to yellow, before i started with Start button.
Please let me know what needs to be done.
Btw, my phone is galaxy ace, bought from saudi arabia (and i regret to have bought this phone as i cud not connect to android market, but thats something different from the current problem)
How do i fix this problem now.
Please help.

I accidentally installed The Myth Ace rom not knowing at the time it was not an official Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 update for my Galaxy Ace. I then tried to uninstall it, but Samsung Kies was not registering my phone, some sites that posted updates did not have valid links, and so many problems after until I got to you guys and this posting.

It is so detailed and so accurate, and so GOOD, THANK YOU SO MUCH. It WORKED and now I have my phone again. Really all the best and the best of luck.

hi, installed this and it complete successfully. only problem is it keeps reloading the samsung logo and gets no further. I rebooted after installing it and just keeps rebooting. From uk.

Just wanted to say thanks, for this awesome guide, i was a noob & may be still a noob some what, i knew nothing about rooting, flashing, ROM, cyanogenmod….etc. with the Help of XDA & people like you i tried almost every rom possible on xda developersand i enkoyed it & the latest was maclaws ICS on CM9… however got really tired of waiting for the bugs to get fixed like Camera etc… however it was fun n exciting….for now i wanted to return back to Stock & ur guide was really very helpfull…thanks for taking the time out to help… thanks again….

If you people experienced like your ace is rebooting and rebooting again, try putting your phone into recovery system by pressing the power and home button simultaneously. Then when you see the samsung logo, remove your finger at the power button.

Then, the recovery menu will come out, then wipe data factory reset and wipe cache. After that, reboot your phone and there it goes!! I have done it several times. So i guess this will work out.

By the way, im from philippines . Hehe. Will this update will work??? Thanks.

But I like the 2.2.1. Can i downgrade my ace from 2.3.6 (GingerBread ) to 2.2.1 (Froyo).

hey sid,
i followd all the steps and here is what i finally got:
8/9 Finished.
csc.rfs download..
9/9 Finished.
reset pda..
Started Timer
Close serial port and wait until rebooting.
PASS!!!
Destroy instant..
Killed timer

then i removed the usb and restarted. Now it keeps on restarting and that too without any tone.
A little clue will be really help man !!!

Hi there, I have purchased a Samsung Galaxy Ace from Bangladesh around 9 months back. At the time of purchase it was a 2.21 froyo. It’s getting pretty slow now and I understand I have to upgrade it. I’ve tried clicking on Firware Upgrade from Kies, but that just tells me that I already have the latest version. But I know others are using 2.3, even 2.4 on this set. I have rooted my galaxy fit with a customized jelly bean rom.. But it keeps on crashing and there are many bugs.. So i wanted to roll back to Gingerbread 2.3.6 and re flashed using ODIN.. The problem is, though i have installed the usb drivers, ODIN is not detecting my phone.. Wont it detect the rooted phones…? Please email me about what should i have to do to solve this issue.. Well Well Well… Good news… i got it working…
All those who are facing the issue i just posted above…i got it fixed & now back on Stock…
All i did was open disconnected the phone (via usb) closed ODIN then i opened KIES (samsung Kies) & once it opened i closed it & started Odin & it worked…
