Have you been to a shopping mall, paid with a credit card and forgotten to take a copy of the credit card receipt? Many of these receipts have your credit card numbers printed on it. And if it has been signed by you then your signature is also there for someone to copy. This is one such instance leading to the identity theft. Credit card fraud is an extensive term for larceny and scam by using it or any other parallel instrument as a source of fund for any monetary transaction. The rationale behind the same can be to obtain goods and services without paying and obtaining unauthorized funds from an account. Thus your lost credit card can well be used by some unscrupulous person for making the payments online or through phone. And you won’t get to know about this until you get your statement. Thus we get one more reason for giving a thorough check on the statement whenever you receive the same. Hence with these fraud practices becoming increasingly common, here’s a quick view on how one can block and get the duplicate cards.
How to block and apply for the card.
When a card is lost or stolen, it remains usable until the holder informs the issuer about its theft. Whenever your card is lost this is the first thing you should do without delaying for even a minute. Thus there are two ways in which one can block the misplaced credit card- through the IVR System or through web portal. You can look for the customer care number and can instantly block your card by verifying your details, so that no one can misuse your property. The customer care number is printed by the issuers in the billing statement so you can get the latest copy of the statement to get the number.
Alternatively, if you have online access to your credit card you can use the website to report your missing credit card. Just log in to the banks website and enter the credit card section. Next you need to seek for the Credit card blocking option under the service request section. Enter the details correctly and they will process your request. After you have blocked the card you will find an option like Request for replacement of credit card. A new card will be issued and the residual balance on your card will be transferred to your new card.
Preventing Future Loss
- Be known about your cards whereabouts. You should only carry cards which you actually need.
- Avoid putting cards directly into your pocket as it is easier for them to slip out. Thus it’s always safe to use card case or card holder.
- Make sure that the cards fit tightly inside the slots of your wallet. If they have become loose or worn, consider purchasing a new one.
- Take time and make a contact list of all the credit card issuers and always keep them with yourself either in mobile or any other way you maintain your important contacts. This will ensure that you can reach your issuer without any delay in the event of loss.
